How to stick your landing
To stick your landing, it is important to swing your arms to balance on after your feet touch the ground.
It is not good that you set your arm to the particular position before your feet touch the ground .
Especially, as you see in a good forward landing, people often swing their arms upward after their feet touched the ground.
Why do people do this ? and How do they stick by this ?
He swings his arms upward to offset the extra rotation because he rotate more than enough.
He always swings his arms upward to stick his landings of front flips without twisting.
– Offset or Add rotation –
Assume that you nearly fall down off a cliff.
The cliff is behind you and sky is in front of you.
Almost all of you would make circular motion with your arms.
Which way would you rotate your arms?
Forward? Backward? or decide the way up to the mood you are in at that time?
If you want to save your life, you should rotate your arms backward.
Because you were rotating froward, so you should offset that rotation by swinging your arms backward.
(cf. Standing Front Flip’s Tip Swing your arms and upper body)
The principle of sticking your landing by swinging your arms is the same as this.
People swing their arms to offset too much rotation.
Or add rotation when rotation is not enough.
Therefore, if your rotation is just good amount, you don’t have to move your arms.
You can see the proper direction of swinging your arms.
rotation/landing | forward | backward |
too much | forward | backward |
not enough | bacward | forward |
He rotates just little too much and offsets that extra rotation by swinging his arms backward and gets forward rotation.
This way of sticking landings is more suitable for forward landings than backward landings.
Because, forward landings are risky because if rotation is not enough, you can easily fall down backward momentarily.
So, in general , you should get little bit more rotation than backward landing.
However, due to that extra rotation, you might fall down forward.
For that case, you should swing your arms backward and get backward momentum (forward frictional force).
– Flip after landing? –
It is the same as the swinging your arms when doing a back flip.
Conversely, if rotation is not enough, you should swing backward from the bottom (like Russian front flip ), or downward from the top (like usual front flip) to add forward rotation.
Having said that, you should set your CG lower to get more stability, your arms should be the bottom.
Backward landings require the opposite usage of arms.
In short, you should like do a standing back flip or standing front flip to offset extra rotation or compensate a shortage of rotation.
You can swing your upper body to stick your landings more frequently.
– Apply to other landings –
Also, you can stick landings in which you break the balance in the transverse by swinging up your arms of the side where you nearly falls down from the bottom.
However, you must note that if you manage to stick your landing, the risk of injury is increased.
To fall down is sometimes important to prevent injury.
